Throughout the Bible, the concepts of mercy and compassion are recurrent themes, often depicting the nature of God. Instead of administering what we deserve, God consistently extends mercy, providing us with opportunities for repentance and salvation. This doesn't absolve us of responsibility but offers a chance for redemption.

As beneficiaries of God's mercy, it is only fitting that we extend the same compassion to others without reservation. We are commanded to mirror God's mercy in our interactions with others. The Bible even emphasizes compassion towards animals, urging us to alleviate their suffering.

Compassion involves empathizing with others' pain and actively aiding them. Our ultimate example of compassion is Jesus, who, by assuming human nature, sacrificed Himself to pave the way for our eternal salvation.

Can we, like Jesus, open our hearts to both friends and strangers, loving them selflessly as we have been loved? Reflecting on the numerous verses about mercy and compassion in the Bible prompts us to contemplate our response to God's mercy and how we extend it to others.

Passages regarding the compassion and mercy of God and Jesus towards us

1. “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin …” Exodus 34:6-7.
2. “Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments …” Deuteronomy 7:9.
