Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has cautioned the successful to be wary of the numerous ‘friends’ who often surround them for personal gain.
In his Open Heavens Daily Devotional on Sunday, October 20, 2024, Pastor Adeboye highlighted the challenge of distinguishing between genuine friends and those driven by ulterior motives.

“Success will attract many ‘friends,’” Pastor Adeboye stated, emphasizing that many are drawn to the successful for selfish reasons.
The 82-year-old cleric advised believers to put their trust in God and not man, noting that some individuals would go to great lengths to ingratiate themselves, only to disappear when trouble arises.
Using the biblical example of Jonadab’s betrayal of Prince Amnon in 2 Samuel 13, Adeboye explained how false friends may offer misleading counsel.
“Real friends will not always say ‘yes’ to your desires,” he said. “When you have people who never tell you the hard truth and support you even when you are clearly going the wrong way, run from such people.”
He also urged the successful to reduce the size of their inner circles as they rise, warning that many people are more interested in what they can gain than in genuine friendship.
“You should have fewer friends as you go higher… because you will discover that most people care more about what you can give them than who you are to them,” he added.
In his concluding prayer, Pastor Adeboye sought divine wisdom for believers: “Father, please give me the gift of discernment of spirits so that I can know who my real friends are and those that are not.”
The message resonates with many who navigate the challenges of success, urging discernment and a deeper reliance on God for guidance.
