Restoring the fallen, the role of 'prayer in spiritual restoration' by Alagbe Shenayon

I saw an image of a former RCF president who got married overseas. Reports claim he's gay and married to another person. Someone familiar with him said he still attends church and serves under a pastor overseas who is also gay.

The issue here isn't about his sexual orientation, but about how believers respond to situations like this. Many of us are quick to condemn others when they backslide, instead of praying for them. Scripture says, "The fervent and effective prayer of a righteous man avails much" (James 5:16). We're called to pray for our brothers and sisters in faith.

Remember when Peter was arrested, and the church prayed for him? (Acts 12:5-17) Most of us know people who have backslidden, but have we prayed for them? It can be painful, and we may ask questions like, "How did this happen?" or "Why did they let it happen?" But despite our questions or feelings, we're still called to pray for them.

Why do we want everyone to go to heaven? As believers, we're not allowed to rest. The devil won't let us. Once you've given your life to Jesus Christ, Scripture says, "Work out your salvation with fear and trembling" (Philippians 2:12).

Recently, I understood the meaning of "watch and pray" (Matthew 26:41). Another scripture says, "Take heed lest you fall" (1 Corinthians 10:12). It's crucial that we remain vigilant, especially when we think we're standing firm. Pride can deceive us into thinking we won't fall.

We must pray for people, especially those who are backsliding. Sometimes it's intentional, and sometimes they're unaware of their spiritual state. As believers, it's our duty to pray for them.

When will we stop publicly condemning others instead of praying for them? Yes, it's painful and hurtful, but prayer is more effective than criticism. We must pray for ourselves too. Often, we're unaware of the struggles others face – financial, spiritual, or otherwise.

I recall times when I've been attacked spiritually while ministering. Prayer and constant check-ups can help. As you read this, take a moment to pray for your friends. Many are struggling in silence.

May the Lord help us support the Body of Christ in Jesus' name. Let's strive to create a community where believers can grow, receive support, and find encouragement. By doing so, we'll fulfill our duty as believers and help each other reach heaven.
