Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the first-ever pope from the United States on Thursday, as announced by the Vatican.
A moderate closely associated with Pope Francis, Prevost spent several years as a missionary in Peru. He now becomes the Catholic Church’s 267th pontiff, adopting the papal name Leo XIV.
